Prehistoric Farm: How to Use a Shovel at Dig Sites
Equip a shovel in Prehistoric Farm, use the hold-and-release digging action, and recognize fossil and non-fossil results.
To use a shovel in Prehistoric Farm, equip it at a marked Dig Site, hold the digging input and release when the meter reaches green. The Wooden Shovel is the starter tool for Cambrian, so your first digging attempt does not require a later shovel purchase.
The gameplay video shows the starter dig and later tool purchases. Use the digging portions to connect the selected tool with the meter action.
Equip the shovel for the site
On keyboard, tools use the 1–9 hotbar selection keys. Select the shovel rather than a fishing tool or food item. Then use a marked fossil Dig Site. A tool's period access matters: carrying a shovel does not mean every period's site will accept that version.
When a site requires a different shovel, treat that as an equipment requirement rather than a meter problem. Conversely, a tool that can dig the site still needs the correct hold-and-release action.
Hold first, then release deliberately
The documented mouse action is hold Click to dig and release in the green timing zone. Watch the meter while holding. The official result is a better find when released in green; no exact hold duration applies to every attempt.
Keyboard instructions do not identify the touch or controller button. On mobile or console, follow the digging control shown by your device's interface while keeping the same visible timing objective.
Read the find before starting another dig
Fossils, coin rewards and Buried Treasure are possible digging outcomes. A non-fossil result does not necessarily mean the selected shovel was wrong. Check whether an obtained fossil belongs to the creature you are collecting, then continue toward its completed set.
Use the shovel guide when deciding which period upgrade you need. Use digging timing when the tool works but releases are inconsistent. Separating those questions helps you avoid purchasing an upgrade to solve an input action you have not practiced yet.
