Look for marked Dig Sites on the fossil island

Begin with Cambrian in the opening collection route. Use the Wooden Shovel at its Dig Site, hold the digging input and release in the green meter zone. A marked Dig Site is the relevant activity location; ordinary ground is not established as an interchangeable fossil source.

Separate getting there from digging there

The named fossil periods include Cambrian, Devonian, Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous. Shovel support expands across those periods: Bronze supports Devonian, Silver Triassic, Iron Jurassic and Titanium Cretaceous, as well as their earlier periods.

A boat journey and a shovel requirement are different constraints. The gameplay player reaches Triassic before owning the required Silver Shovel. Do not infer a particular boat unlock from a digging-tool label.

Return to the correct service afterward

A completed creature set belongs at Dr. Ivy's DNA Lab on Home Island. Going back to the lab turns the completed collection into an egg; remaining at a Dig Site does not perform that exchange.

Use getting fossils for reward types and the collection action. Use the DNA Lab guide when the set is ready. Check the exact site and tool in the game before spending on travel equipment merely because a digging prompt refuses the starter shovel.
